Label TextBrowne was Dickens' principal illustrator from the late 1830s to 1859. His nickname "Phiz" referred to his gift for drawing faces, which were known as phizzes, shorthand for physiognomy, the study of how a person's character or personality is manifest in their outer appearance, a practice that gained popularity in the nineteenth century. Here David Copperfield appears in his accustomed role as an observer of the adult world.
