Label TextCopley was born in America, but spent much of the latter part of his life in England where he painted his great history painting, The Siege of Gibraltar, for the Corporation of the City of London. It is now in the Guildhall Art Gallery in London. This is one of dozens of preparatory drawings for the massive painting.
