Label TextA Quaker from New York's Hudson River Valley, Mary Hallock Foote accompanied her mining engineer husband to postings in California, Colorado and Idaho. Her twelve novels, four short story collections, many essays and innumerable illustrations often presented a domestic side of the West, revealing the struggles and triumphs of women settlers. This drawing is one of eleven from Foote's series "Pictures of the Far West."Hallock Foote attended Cooper Union Institute of Design for Women where she studied wood engraving. She then began her career as a wood engraver and illustration for Harper's and other publishers. She exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the 1913 Armory Show in New York.
