Label TextIn June of 1892 Samuel Bancroft acquired perhaps the most significant work of art in his collection, Edward Burne-Jones’ The Council Chamber. Hanging in the gallery next door, this masterwork is one of a series related to the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty painted by the artist. In addition to the painting, he purchased at the same time four photogravures of the most famous series of paintings of the same subject which had been exhibited to great acclaim at the dealer, Thomas Agnew & Sons, in London, and purchased by Alexander Henderson, later first Baron Faringdon, to be installed in the Saloon at Buscot Park.
