Label TextDuring their attempt to gain control of Philadelphia in 1777–1778, the British replaced their commanding general. The departing general's officers staged a grand farewell day of entertainment. Howard Pyle's illustration shows what was, according to one commentator, the "wildest folly and extravagance" of the British Army and the city's royalists during these festivities.
