Label TextAccording to a note, this early watercolor was given to Helen Farr Sloan by Mary Kerr, a cousin of Dolly Sloan, the artist's first wife. Kerr told Farr Sloan that this was produced by John Sloan at age 12 (c.1883), but this date seems early. In the handling of drapery, it appears more mature than his watercolors in an 1884 edition of Treasure Island, but the rendering of anatomy is far less confident than in Sloan's watercolors produced at the Charcoal Club. Thus, the date likely falls somewhere in between 1883 and 1893.
