Label TextThis drawing illustrates a scene from Edward Bulwer Lytton's The Last Days of Pompeii. The subject had some currency at the time Sloan drew this; the Philadelphia Academy of Music was advertising for a production of John Philip Sousa's latest original composition, a suite inspired by Lytton's book.
