Label TextJohn Sloan must have tired of the barrage of pretty girls that graced the covers of magazines in the first decade of the 20th century, when he was earning his living as an illustrator. He amused himself by transforming these bland beauties into earthier exemplars of femininity. His alterations resulted in images that were generally silly, sometimes ribald, and often a bit surreal.
