Label TextGene Davis was a member of the Washington Color School, a group of painters living and working in Washington, D.C. that included Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland. Davis began to paint these deceptively simple compositions in the late 1950s. By varying the width and color of the vertical stripes, Davis experimented with the rhythmic possibilities of abstraction.
