Label TextWhile the original poster served as an advertisement for the centennial exhibition of lithography at the Galerie Rapp in Paris, this smaller version, known as an affiche, was produced for poster collectors as part of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster), a collection of over 200 color lithographics plates published in Paris. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in an 11 x 15 inch format, was assembled by Jules Chéret, considered France's leading poster artist. The prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. On sixteen occasions between the publication's lifetime from December 1895 to November 1900, the monthly package included a bonus of one specially created lithograph.Louis Maurice Boutet de Monvel
