Label TextCreated for the main living room at “Rockford,” the Wilmington home of Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft, this window was designed by Lydia Field Emmet working for the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company of New York. Bancroft employed Tiffany to design much of the decorative scheme of this 1892 remodeling project. “Rockford” was redesigned as a showcase of Mr. Bancroft’s growing collection of Pre-Raphaelite art. Tiffany’s decorative aesthetic emulated the fine craftsmanship advocated by the English Arts and Crafts Movement, making it a good fit for Bancroft’s needs. The window’s designer, Lydia Emmet, trained as a painter at the Parisian Académie Julian and at the Art Students League in New York. In addition to her work for Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, she was also an illustrator.
