Label TextIn 1881, the artist Hubert Herkomer created this poster for The Magazine of Art as part of his canpaign to improve the quality of the posters that dominated London's public places.The scene testifies to Herkomer's debt to classical art and Renaissance painting. Knowledgeable viewers would have recognized Raphael (whose fresco the School of Athens is the poster’s main source) watching the scene from the left-hand side.
