Label TextBlanche McManus designed this poster to advertise a collection of German legends recounted as the author traces the route of the Rhine. The stylized waves, billowing drapery, and undulations of the harpist's hair reflect the Art Nouveau style and suggest the river journey.A native of Louisiana, Blanche McManus studied in London and Paris, and then returned to the U.S. in 1893 when she established a studio in Chicago. Beginning around 1900, her travels throughout Europe and North Africa with her writer husband Francis Milton resulted in a series of travel books illustrated by McManus.
