Label TextLike many of Grace Rhys' stories, “The Charming of Estercel” is set in Elizabethan Ireland and involves romantic intrigue among Ulster clans. As Eileen sets a charmed ring in a bird's nest, she is confident that the hero Estercel will find it and realize that he loves her. Pyle's palette reflects the words and spirit of the text: “Green buds in showers gemmed the boughs...Hope and an innocent imagination painted the image of Estercel before her in livelier, yet more delicate, colors than the seen love brings to any created eye.”
