Label TextIn this story about a married couple who visit France after World War I to see the grave of their soldier son, the husband is approached by a prostitute in a cafe. The illustrator Frederic Gruger highlights the man's face with a shaft of light, and the prostitute's presence with her central position. Most of the other cafe patrons serve as background rather than as fully realized characters.
