Label Text"The Beating" tells the fictional tale of girls being punished for attempting to run away from a harsh reform school. The story is told from the point of view of a girl, not pictured, listening to her friend being beaten, while other residents of the reform school--"goody-goods" who curried favor with their keepers in hopes of being released--hold her friend down. The listener is awaiting her own punishment, while gazing at the sign hanging in the dormitory that reads "God Is Love."Joseph Christian Leyendecker
