Label TextIn 1913 Philadelphia sculptor Charles Grafly began preparing models for a sculptural memorial to "The Pioneer Mother." Commissioned for placement on the approach to the Fine Arts building of the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, the memorial was funded by a statewide campaign and private subscription raised from the children of pioneer mothers who crossed the plains hoping to find a new life for their families in California.
