Label TextThe caption for this drawing relates it to Carter G. Woodson's book African Myths, Together with Proverbs, a compilation of traditional tales published as a supplementary reader for chidren in 1928. The published version features illustrations by other artists. Wells' drawings may be unused pictures for that book or illustrations for a later printing that has not been identified. Around this time, Wells illustrated other publications for Woodson's Associated Publishers, one of the nation's few publishing houses run by African Americans and dedicated to publishing the work of Black authors and artists.
