Label TextBy 1905, Maxfield Parrish's luminous colors and detailed characters made him a favorite illustrator for magazines and advertisements. Despite this hobo's down-and-out economic status, he projects an almost dreamy optimism. The image would have created empathy for the poor, without introducing any social critique.Trained in art by his father, the painter and printmaker Stephen Parrish (1846-1938) and artist Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), Maxfield Parrish won design competitions while he was still in college. He continued his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and, briefly, with Howard Pyle. His long career encompassed a wide range of illustrations for books, magazines, posters, advertisements, calendars, greeting cards, murals, and prints.
