Label TextThis medicine bag I’m wearing was made by my grandmother for a sun dance ceremony when I was a teen. It holds sage from the ceremony. The ribbon shirt is the one I got for the ceremony—it still fits. I was a smudge boy, carrying hot coals and incense. To prevent getting burned, the shirt doesn’t have the traditional ribbons hanging down.The sun dance ceremony is a Lakota tradition, but an elder had a vision of the ceremony by the water and brought it here. We fast for four days, and there’s a sweat lodge. As a teen, the ceremony cemented my spiritual and cultural roots.
