Label TextLike many artists of his generation, Wells was influenced by the forms and styles of African sculpture, which he likely encountered in exhibitions in New York. This work was created in 1929, the same year that he joined the faculty of Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he taught printmaking for forty years.
