Label TextGeorge DuMaurier is best known for his Punch cartoons of fashionable society and his novel, Trilby, dramatizing the lives of three young painters studying in Paris. This drawing, for which no known subject or source is known, is comprised of the initial letter “B” formed by a windblown tree in front of a farmhouse. DuMaurier was a prolific illustrator, much in demand during his lifetime. In addition to full illustrations, DuMaurier often contributed illustrated initials, of which this may be an example. Samuel Bancroft purchased the drawing and letter from a New York book dealer where he had seen it on display along with several other examples of Victorian drawing.George Louis Palmella Busson Du Maurier
