Label TextWoodard became fascinated with African art and culture after an African visited her family when she was twelve years old. Her sculptures--both masks and more realistic heads--reflect her interest and research in this area. In 1935, around the time this mask was made, Woodard was the first African American artist to have a solo show at the Los Angeles Museum.
