Label TextThis drawing appears to have been the basis for a more-simplified version of F. O. C. Darely's illustration in a 1862 edition of Clement Clarke Moore's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas." In a style that other illustrators would follow, Darley portrays St. Nicholas as a portly gray-haired man, not the diminutive character of Moore's poem. Here he taps his nose in the traditional gesture of secrecy.Felix Octavius Carr Darley
