Label TextWappers was a Belgian academic painter best remembered for his work as a teacher and mentor. He taught both Ford Madox Brown and Lawrence Alma-Tadema, while Director of the Antwerp Academy. The subject of this painting is unknown, but there are several clues to what suggests is a romantic narrative. These include the partially viewed portrait of the male figure on the right, the image of the shipwreck hanging on the wall in the background, and the purple flowers the young woman holds in her hand.
