Label TextUpon confronting Salomé, Iokanaan prophesizes, “I hear in the palace the beating wings of the angel of death.” Herod will also perceive the beating of wings just before the fated bargain is made with Salomé. The androgyny of the figure conveys an element of eroticism that is comparable to Beardsley’s illustrations.
