Label TextThomas Bayard served as the first U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1893–97). He was immensely popular during his posting to London, greatly strengthening Anglo American relations. At the end of his tenure the Lord Mayor of London hosted a banquet in his honor. At this event he was presented with a cup topped by a bust, which was the genesis of this sculpture. It was through the Stillman family’s friendship with Samuel Bancroft that Effie was commissioned for the full figure statue of Bayard which stands on the parkway outside of the Museum.
