Label TextThis drawing illustrated Lew Wallace's novel about Spanish conquistadors and Aztec civilization, which Eric Pape researched on trips to Mexico. Pape exhibited 120 works, including this one, in the Palace of Ethnology and Archaeology, Pan American Exposition, Buffalo, 1901. The collection was subsequently exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Cincinnati Art Museum.
