Label TextJoan Semmel explores female sexuality through the representation of her own body. Her earliest figurative paintings in the 1970s present nude couples or the artist’s own supine form as seen from above. Many of Semmel’s paintings are based on photographs she takes of herself in the mirror such as this print, which is also the source image for her 2006 painting, titled Disappearing.
