Label TextPhiladelphia-native Sidney Goodman attended Philadelphia College of Art, now University of the Arts, and taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1978 until his retirement in 2011. Emerging in the period of experimentation following Abstract Expressionism, Goodman quickly became known as one of the most important American figurative painters working in the second half of the twentieth century. Goodman executed the human figure with precision while imbuing his compositions with a sense of mystery and emotion that captures the wide range of individual experience. While drawing was an important part of his process throughout his career, it was in the 1970s that the form began to gain equal footing with his painting. Some works from the late 1960s, such as Woman on Bed, maintain the look of a preparatory sketch while hinting at the prominent place drawing would later attain.
