Label TextHoward’s bright, flattened composition may be influenced by his years studying French painter Henri Matisse’s work in the Barnes Foundation’s collection. Howard began incorporating fabric collage in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The artist used textiles created at the Howard Heartsfield Design Studio, the Philadelphia firm operated by his son David, and wife Karla Heartsfield.
