Label TextA ghastly character in Dante's Divine Comedy, the Italian nobleman Ugolino della Gherardesca (c.1220–1289) was condemned to die of starvation with his sons. As they were dying, the sons invoked Ugolino to eat their flesh. Baskin pictures Ugolino alone pondering this tragic choice.
