Label TextBorn in 1913 in Indianapolis, Felrath Hines attended the Art Institute of Chicago in the mid-1940s and later studied design at Pratt Institute in New York. The artist became involved with the Civil Rights movement in the early 1960s and joined the Spiral Group, a collective of African American artists formed in New York City in 1963. Hines was inspired by Cubism and the De Stijl movement and later by American modernists such as Ad Reinhardt and Stuart Davis, the influences of which can be seen in this untitled, abstract painting.
