Label TextBerenice Abbott had been documenting the cityscape of New York for years when her initiative became part of New York City's Federal Art Project in 1935. The photographer's Changing New York project chronicled the city's transformation into a modern metropollis, based on a similar project undertaken decades previously by Parisian photographer Eugene Atget. Abbott encountered and preserved Atget's archive as a studio assistant to Surrealilst photographer Man Ray.Elenore Plaisted Abbott
