Label TextJames Smetham was part of the circle of artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The Resurrection of the Daisy was inspired by Chaucer's Legend of the Good Women and includes a passage from the prologue of this text beneath the image. Although the artist's intent is somewhat enigmatic, the meaning of the subject can generally be interpreted as a reference to the symbolic presence of spiritual love and Christian resurrection in the springtime growth of the daisy.
