Label TextBetween 1914 and 1918, John Sloan spent summers at an artists' colony at Gloucester, Massachusetts. Sloan occupied his days painting the landscape and inhabitants around Gloucester. These works, often experimental in nature, incorporate bold brushwork coupled with brightened color palettes based on the color theories of Hardesty Maratta. Other influences included the work of French artists, such as van Gogh and Renoir, whose work Sloan viewed first hand at the 1913 Armory Show in New York.
