Biography: Born in New Jersey, Florence Scovel Shinn (1869-1940) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she was at the center of a lively group of artists, including her future husband Everett Shinn. After marriage, they settled in New York. Their Greenwich Village home at 112 Waverly Place became a gathering place for artists and actors, and they constructed an outdoor theater to stage plays with their friends. She and Shinn divorced in 1912. She wrote humorous articles and books, and illustrated for mainstream magazines.
