John Rae
Date: American illustrator, 1882–1963
Biography: John Rae (1882-1963) was born in Jersey City (NJ). He studied with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute, and with F. V. Du Mond and Kenyon Cox; he also studied at the Art Students League in New York. Rae was well-known as an author and illustrator of children's books, though he also illustrated adult books for publishers including Harper's, Macmillan, and Dodd Mead. Rae was a member of the Society of Illustrators and other artists' groups. His portrait subjects included Albert Einstein and Carol Sandburg. He was Instructor of Painting and Design at Rollins College, Winter Park Florida, from 1935 to 1940.

Rae lived for many years in Caldwell, NJ, but moved to North Stonington, CT, in his later years.
