Hananiah Harari
Date: American painter, 1912–2000
Biography: Born in Rochester, New York, Harari made a living as a painter of society portraits and taught at the American Artists School, the New School for Social Research, the School of Visual Arts, and the Art Students League in New York. He studied art at Syracuse University and then traveled to Paris where he studied with Andre Lhote, Fernand Leger, and Marcel Gromaire. Returning to New York, he became a founder of the American Abstract Artists group. Despite this affiliation, Harari never relinquished his interest in figurative work and explored a variety of styles and subjects throughout his long career.
