Biography: Dewing was born near Boston and studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris. He returned to the United States by 1879 and settled in New York. He married the accomplished painter Maria Oakey Dewing. He is best known for tonalist paintings that situate women in moody, dreamlike settings, often sylvan landscapes or aestheticized interiors. He spent his summers at the Cornish Art Colony in New Hampshire.
