Biography: Born in Massachusetts, Ashley studied at the Eric Pape School where his fellow students included N.C. Wyeth, Sidney Chase and Henry Peck. In 1901, he studied with George Noyes and then with Howard Pyle. He established a winter residence in Wilmington, spending summers in New Bedford, and on his inherited farm in Westport, Massachusetts. He became known as a specialist in marine illustration; he wrote and illustrated whaling-related books and magazine articles.
The New Bedford Whaling Museum, in conjunction with the Brandywine Museum, mounted a major show of Ashley's work in a 1973 exhibition.
