About: A native Texan, David Bates was influenced early by his experiences of the land and people of the southern state. Bates renders the cypress swamp, snake, and musculature of the carpenter with a technique reminiscent of the American modernists he admires: Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986), Arthur Dove (1880–1946), and Marsden Hartley (1877–1943).
