About: In James Montgomery Flagg's cover for the humor magazine Judge, he gave this couple a blurry appearance, as if we are seeing them through a wet window. Their enforced intimacy under the umbrella delights the man, while the woman - shrinking a little under the embrace of his large hand - seems less pleased. The published cover was colorized—probably by the magazine’s art staff—to give it a much brighter appearance. Probably an art editor thought Flagg’s more nuanced tones weren’t sufficiently eye-catching for a newsstand. Illustrators were used to such alterations by magazine design departments
