About: James Preston's spare design, with brighter colors against neutral ones, and rounded contours against geometric ones, places the advertised magazine in the foreground. The figure profiled at the window with its winter scene is typical of the Gibson Girl image, the prototype of the ideal American woman popularized by the illustrator Charles Dana Gibson. Around the turn of the 20th century, voluminous clothing and muffs were ways of concealing pregnancy, which may be depicted here.
