About: Death, the subject of this illustration to a German ballad, is lugubriously depicted as an organist rises from his instrument and turns to look at the recently expired body of a man lying nearby. The figure of Death is depicted as a skeleton, who is working the bellows of the organ. The medieval character of Sandys’ wood engravings is based on his appreciation and study of the work of Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528).
