About: Observing how much the Prince admires the dog's tricks, a citizen gives him the dog as a gift. Thrilled with his new pet, the Prince must give it back at the command of his aunt the Archduchess, enduring yet another hindrance to a normal childhood. The age effects on this drawing are typical of illustrations that were rarely preserved once they had served their purpose. Becher's arrangements for the return of his work once published have not survived.
