About: This was a preparatory sketch for a mural painted for the George Gray School in Wilmington, depicting the arrival at Fort Christina of Johan Printz, the governor of New Sweden from 1643 to 1653. It also appeared as the frontispiece for Christopher Ward's history text. Wyeth shows Printz reading out his credentials, standing with his staff of office and the royal crest of Sweden as if on a stage set, with the sea and ship painted as a backdrop.
