About: While living in Germany, Hartley painted a series of landscapes based on his recollections of travel to the American Southwest between 1918 and 1920. Surprisingly, for a scene of the Southwest, the color of this work is cool and dark. His brooding tones may reflect the ominous political situation in Germany.
