About: While living in Germany, Marsden Hartley painted a series of landscapes based on his recollections of a trip to the American Southwest taken between 1918 and 1920. Surprisingly, for a scene of the Southwest, the color of this work is cool and dark and its mood is ominous. Hartley’s pastel drawings, made in New Mexico, are saturated with color and uplifting in tone. With time and distance from his subject, he concentrated on the distinctive horizon and rolling forms of the landscape.
