About: The Pre-Raphaelites’ reverence for literature included the Bible. Siddal, Rossetti’s pupil and eventually his wife, was primarily a watercolorist, with a naive but compelling—almost wistful—style that is unique among the painters of this period. Sadly, her artistic career has been somewhat overshadowed by her tumultuous relationship with Rossetti and her ensuing death from an overdose of laudanum—an opium derivative widely used for medicinal purposes.
